Exterior Inspection
The initial inspection of the home revealed a great deal of exterior activity and burrowing near a garden box by the house’s extension. The burrowing was so bad they appeared to have pushed through into the foundation. This is a common occurrence as rats are very skilled burrowers and have large incisors that continue to grow for their whole life. They are more than able to chew away aged concrete, metal and PVC pipes. They can sever electric lines and start a fire in a wall or attic where it will be very hard to put out. The possible cause was the next-door neighbour’s property which was not being cared for properly and had a great deal of detritus that can attract rats.
Interior Inspection
The initial inspection of the inside of the home revealed both rat activity in the lower house and mouse activity in the kitchen and attic. Mice are not like rats in that they live in a house permanently. They have much lower water content and are much harder to find. However, they still can cause similar destruction and can access even small entryways than rats can. The house was found to have a large amount of activity with feces found in the kitchen and attic.
Initial Measures
The initial measures taken by the technician the technicians initial measures were to treat the rat and mouse infestation inside and outside of the house. The rats on the exterior were treated with large weighted tamper-proof bait stations containing single-use commercial-grade rodenticide. While rats are careful of what they eat they are more voracious than mice and will eat enough poison in their first meal to feel the full effects. The bait is designed as coated blocks of birdseed which is rats’ favourite food. The birdseed blocks of rodenticide have holes that are used to attach them securely to the inside of the bait station making it impossible to remove large pieces. The entranceway is also a narrow tunnel followed by a tight turn into an atrium where the bait is stored with barriers to access it that will stop other animals from being poisoned. The interior was treated with snap traps that are baited and set for the singular purpose of catching rats in the house and preventing them from dying in the walls. The mice were treated with tamper-proof bait stations of a smaller size containing multi-use commercial-grade rodenticide that must be consumed multiple times to take effect. Mice are very careful with trying new food as they cannot regurgitate and any poison they eat will kill them. The added bonus is the poison acts on vitamin K, inhibiting its production leading to wide-scale organ failure and desiccation through anti-coagulation. The mice are safe to die in the walls because they desiccate entirely.
Proposed exclusion
The proposed exclusion by the technician was extensive. There were a full eighteen feet of the open soffit to be sealed using silicone gap sealant to prevent mice and other rodents access to the attic. There were seven open and accessible wall vents that were sealed off with black rubber-coated galvanized steel waterproof cages. One foundation gap was found to be an entry point and was sealed using a concreter or concrete repair substitute. A two-year warranty is always provided on exclusion work.
Conclusion
In conclusion, The customer’s mouse issue and rat issues have been resolved using powerful commercial treatments and galvanized steel exclusion. The customer has not seen activity since the work was completed and is pleased with the results and has not had a repeat infestation.
